About Shelley

Shelley Jameson’s distinguished international career as a managed opera singer, earned acclaim  for her expressive artistry and exceptional vocal technique. The Los Angeles Times praised her  “soaring pianissimos,” noting her “beautifully conveying the role of Musetta as an actress.” She  performed leading roles with major opera companies throughout the United States and abroad,  establishing herself as a compelling and versatile artist on the international operatic stage.

A recognized expert in voice pedagogy, Shelley specializes in bel canto vocal technique backed  by modern voice science. Shelley’s teaching combines the timeless principles of Italian bel  canto with a thorough understanding of vocal anatomy, breath support and management, vocal  health, and vocal production.

Shelley credits two exceptional mentors for shaping her approach to teaching. She completed  her postgraduate vocal studies in New York City with renowned pedagogue Dodi Protero, whose  own training traces directly to legendary Italian coloratura soprano Toti Dal Monte. While  earning her Master of Music in Vocal Performance, Shelley studied with Dr. Tom Cleveland,  former Director of Vocology at the Vanderbilt Voice Center and Professor of Otolaryngology at  Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Under Dr. Cleveland's guidance, she developed  extensive expertise in vocal anatomy, vocal hygiene, voice science, and vocal rehabilitation.

Beyond vocal technique, Shelley believes that great singers must also be compelling storytellers.  Her teaching emphasizes truthful communication of text through acting, incorporating the Sense Memory technique introduced to her by internationally acclaimed opera director Frank  Corsaro during one of her prestigious young artist programs. She continues to find this approach  one of the most effective methods for developing authentic, emotionally connected  performances in both professional and emerging singers.

Shelley's students benefit from a rare combination of elite professional performance  experience, extensive teaching experience, comprehensive scientific understanding of the voice, and a deep commitment to developing complete singing artists. Her students have gone on to  achieve recognition in both classical and contemporary music, including rising pop artist Celine Wanyi, who was selected as a 2026 Spotify RADAR Singapore & Malaysia artist & Youtube Music Foundry Artist Program. Shelley is  committed to helping each singer build a healthy, expressive, and sustainable voice while  developing the artistry needed for lasting success.

About Joel

Joel’s distinguished career as a professional operatic bass performing much of the great Verdi  bass repertoire, was widely praised for his rich, resonant voice, seamless legato, and expressive  musical artistry. While classically trained and deeply rooted in the operatic tradition, Joel has also found great  fulfillment coaching contemporary commercial artists. His teaching at JCVA has helped singers across pop, R&B, and other contemporary genres develop healthy, sustainable vocal technique  while preserving their unique artistic identity. A highlight was his foundational work with Audrey Nuna, who provided the singing voice for Mira in Netflix's global hit KPop Demon Hunters.

Audrey is featured on the film's landmark song "Golden," which earned the Grammy Award for  Best Song Written for Visual Media. Joel's enthusiasm for working with singers beyond the  classical tradition reflects his belief that sound vocal technique is universal. By applying the  enduring principles of healthy vocal production to today's diverse musical landscape, he helps  artists of every genre achieve technical freedom and vocal longevity.

Joel’s vocal and artistic development was profoundly shaped by studying with three exceptional  master teachers: Dr. Tom Cleveland, retired Director of Vocology at the Vanderbilt Voice Center  and Professor of Otolaryngology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Dr. Cleveland’s  expertise provided a thorough understanding of vocal anatomy, science and a special focus on  vocal rehabilitation; Renowned lyric coloratura Dodi Protero of New York City, internationally  respected for her artistry and dedication to the Italian school of bel canto singing and the  legendary Jerome Hines, celebrated Metropolitan Opera bass, whose artistry continues to  inspire countless generations of singers.

In addition to his acclaimed work as a performer and vocal teacher, Joel is a dynamic conductor and musical leader with extensive experience in choral, operatic, and orchestral repertoire. He has led national and international tours with his college Chorale and conducted major operatic works with the Opera Workshop including La Traviata, La Bohème, Die Fledermaus, The Merry Widow, The Magic Flute, and Puccini’s Il Trittico.  His concert repertoire includes Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, and the choral preparation for Beethoven’s monumental Ninth Symphony, as well as selections from Christ on the Mount of Olives.

Among the crowning achievements of Joel’s conducting career are concert performances with choir and orchestra at Lincoln Center’s prestigious David Geffen Hall, a stage recognized around the world as a pinnacle of musical performance.  His repertoire encompasses the grandeur and emotional power of Verdi’s Requiem selections as well as the distinctive American voice of Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs. His work reflects a commanding range of the great choral and orchestral traditions.

Whether mentoring emerging artists, established professionals, or contemporary commercial  singers, Joel offers thoughtful individualized instruction, whether in person or online, that  enables every student to realize their fullest artistic potential with vocal freedom, technical  confidence, and authentic expression.

“Studying with Shelley has been one of the most meaningful parts of my musical journey. I began lessons with her in October 2021, and in the five years since, my voice has transformed in ways I never could have imagined. Shelley is not only an incredible voice teacher, but also a true cheerleader and wonderful mentor.

Her lessons have given me consistency, confidence, and a much healthier relationship with my voice. She understands my voice so deeply and is able to walk me through exactly what I need to do to improve. In every class, we focus on great vocal technique and vocal health, which has helped me feel stronger, safer, and more expressive as a singer.

Shelley has helped me become much more confident as a performer and emotionally connected to the songs I write and sing. She has helped me trust the process — and that trust has paid off beautifully.”

“There are many great singers that have had wonderful careers, but simply don't have the ability or talent to be able to teach good vocal technique.  This is not the case with Joel and Shelley Jameson…..Their commitment to the highest standards of vocal technique as well as all skills of stage and career development are deeply needed in our world of singing today.”
